Keep Healthy
Physical Activity
Be more physically active - aim for at least 30 minutes of physical activity a day. It's one of the best things you can do for your health.
You don’t have to run marathons to benefit from physical activity. A lot of simple, easy activities can improve your health, like walking, jogging and dancing. Choose something you enjoy and work it into your daily routine. Ten minutes here and there throughout the day can quickly add up to 30 minutes you need and you don’t have to stop at 30 minutes a day. In general, the more you do, the better. Here are some tips to get you started:
* Take the stairs instead of the elevator.
* Take a walk at lunchtime with a friend.
* Walk the dog.
* Go out dancing.
* Do easy stretching exercises in the morning.
* Check your local paper for events to get you moving, like nature walks or walking tours
It is important to start slowly and build up gradually. As you become more physically active, you may want to increase your efforts by running, swimming or working out at your local YMCA. But be sure to talk to a doctor before making a big change in your usual activities.
Being physically active is an important part of a healthy lifestyle. It is also a great way to reduce your risk of not only breast cancer, but also coronary heart disease, stroke, obesity, diabetes, abnormal cholesterol levels, high blood pressure and colon cancer. Exercise can also improve flexibility, strength and balance and it can even decrease feelings of depression and anxiety.
